New Kenwood radios: TM-D710 & TM-V71

A PDF file with pictures of the two new Kenwood rigs TM-D710 and TM-V71 can be found on the FCC website:

PDF.

When you click on the link, you will get a file called retrive.cgi. Just rename this file to whatever.pdf and you can open it with your Acrobat Reader. Unfortunately no technical details are available. At least both seem to be dual or twin banders.

Oooo, thanks Chris – I’m an avid follower of Kenwood radios – I really don’t think anything has surpassed the TMD 700 for the VHF/UHF bands. Heres hoping the new 710 has the on board TNC/APRS functionality …….

I am hopeful that the new TM-D710 is a replacement for the TMD-700A with all the functionality and improvements. I was within days of buying two new 700′s but now will wait to see what comes of the new rig.

    73 es thanks de Jeff

I was surprised to see that Kenwood has released new radios. But this is actually good news…

TNC functionality would definitely be nice. It really surprises me that Kenwood does not release an update of the TH-D7. There doesn’t exist an alternative on the market if you are looking for something portable with an internal TNC.

I’m a bit disapointed by the missing APRS features.

That is indeed bad news. Would have given APRS a boost…

From what I see on the faceplate, there is APRS on the TM-D710

I somewhere had the specs, but where  .

But there should be more stuff available on the Kenwood website. Unfortunately I forgot to ask when I visited Ham Radio fair in Friedrichshafen.

I own a D700 radio and I recentelly bought the D710. With my D700 I am able to run APRS on one side connected to the computer with UIView on one side and Echolink on the other connected with an interface through the data port of the D700 ant the sond card of my PC on the other. Does anyone knows how can I do that with the D710? Thank a lot

Unfortunately I don’t own a TM-D710, so I can’t help you in this matter. But maybe other readers have experience with that.

I am new to ham and I am interested in echolink. Would any of you be kind enough to give me a report on the Kenwood TM-V71A? Is this the best way to go for Echolink, or is there a better setup? Does the V71A eliminate equipment, and is it the best way to go for Echolink?

Thank you for any help you can be.

You dont need a 71E or a 710E to use Echolink just download the software for your PC and use Echo Link from your PC.

But doing Echolink with you radio without a computer is a thrilling idea… Would be the first radio with ethernet connection :)

Well find a local repeater thats hooked into Echolink and IRLP and all you need then is just a DTMF microphone to generate the key tones to the Nodes…no need to go out and buy these super duper so called Echolink radios…if your radio got DTMF then your away.

Another great mode is Eqso this is similar to Echolink and SWL’s can chat here also if they are in rooms with no links to repeaters.

In fact you dont need a DTMF microphone just find a repeater link using IRLP key your microphone and use your telephone keypad to punch in the node number and Bingo.

That is right, but not everybody has an echolink repeaters in his vicinity… Especially here in DL the density of echolink repeaters is still low.

Therefore a radio with ethernet interface would be a nice thing.

I have a Kenwood 710, ui-view32 and mapping and traveler 8.0. I am new in APRS and for the life of me I can not get them to work all together. I have the 710 on the air and working with aprs in west central florida, but I can not get the radio to talk to the computer or ui-view32 an mapping and traveler 8.0 to work together…. Even with all the help screens, it does not give a new person to aprs a simple enough way to set up all the screens to make them work together… Enough rambling, just wish someone could write down step by step directions on which way I could go

I have received the following via email:

I tried everything too with no luck, and I was not at the rear with the gear when they was handing out the brains…unfortunately the chap that devised the UiView 32 program is now silent key so we cant now even hope that a script can be formulated for the TM-710 like they did with the THD7E to solve our problems.
What a pity….works ok on its own anyway in my view…fantastic radio equipment even if it does not work with UiView.

I’m in the process of connecting a new Kenwood TMV 71A for Echolink for my radio club. I’m looking for someone that can help me with the Sysop Settings. I believe the radio is correctly set up but it will not talk to the computer.

    Thanks,

    Steve
