Ham Radio goes digg.com: HAMigg

Inspired by a project called “SEOigg“, which is special topic social bookmarking platform, I started to work on a project called “HAMigg“. Since yesterday, the new website is online.

What is this about?
HAMigg is a social bookmarking platform similar to digg.com. But it should be limited to ham radio or technical topics.

Why has HAMigg been created?
HAMigg has been created as I think that current social bookmarking platforms are heavily congested. Digg.com currently has around 4600 new messages waiting in the queue. Even if you limit your search to certain tags, it is very easy to miss the real good stuff. And there is a lot of interesting ham stuff on the internet. HAMigg is an effort to help to shed a little light on this jungle.

How does it work?
Pretty easy: Just visit HAMigg and check out either the front page or the upcoming stories queue. You now have the possibility to rate the submitted stories using one of the two arrow buttons located left to the corresponding article. Articles which receive a lot of positive votes will rank high, others will rank low.

Where do I find the stuff?
All new content will be first stored in the upcoming stories queue. Once it has been parked there, users can vote. When a certain amount of positive votes has been received, the story will be promoted to the front page. During the startup-phase of the project all stories will be automatically promoted to the front page. This might change later, when more content is being posted to prevent cluttering up the front page.

How can I stay up to date? I don’t want to visit the page every day.
Nearly all areas like upcoming stories, front page stories or recent news about the site provide a RSS feed. This makes staying up to date relatively easy.

Additionally all content can be tagged with keywords and will be accessible via a tag cloud or the corresponding tag. The tags itself also provide RSS feeds.

How can I submit new articles?
Just register and you can start submitting stories right away. Unfortunately registration is necessary to prevent spam submissions which is pretty common these days :( .

If you would like to include a “submit to HAMigg” button on your blog, you will find some information here. So far two buttons are online (text and image) and a “plugin” for Firefox, which enables you to submit pages with a single mouseclick (similar to the wordpress bookmarklet).

Can I submit my own blog articles?
Yes! As long as it deals with ham radio or tech stuff. HAMigg is about sharing content. Why not your own?

So go ahead and start submitting content. Hope you like it :) .
